This is an excel spreadsheet that will automatically calculate the results of a 3-day Calorie count. In long-term care settings, a Calorie count may be used to estimate a resident’s nutritional intake, and may be useful to help understand weight gain/loss, intake from food vs. supplements, and for weaning off tube feeding.

Review the pre-populated Calories and protein for standard meal items and adjust to your facility’s standard. Then simply add in resident information, and percent of each meal item consumed. The sheet will automatically calculate Kcal and Protein eaten per day, and average over 3 days, and will compare to your estimate of daily needs. Add your recommendations, save, and file!

When I worked in long-term care, I would create one of these sheets for each Calorie count. After completion, I would save a copy of the file, print and file in the resident’s chart, and provide a copy for the physician and nursing for further discussion. I could complete an entire analysis in 2 minutes with this tool!
