Are you working with teens and their families for eating disorder recovery? Are you feeling overwhelmed about how to implement the various phases and what to cover with parents? This can be even more challenging when you are the only eating disorder informed healthcare provider on the team (which can often be the case!).

Perhaps you have encountered resistance and had to navigate difficult conversations with parents around their child’s treatment goal weight, the medical complications of eating disorder and the parent’s role in their child’s eating disorder recovery.

While it is true that traditional FBT does not include a Dietitian or formal nutrition recommendations, an FBT-informed approach to eating disorder recovery can be a great approach to complement a Dietitian’s nutrition expertise.

This collection of handouts was designed to empower you so that you can empower the families that you work with, in order to provide the most comprehensive eating disorder care for teens!

This non-branded 22-page package includes the following handouts organized in a zip file:

  • The Eating Disorder Treatment Team: a 1-page handout explaining the various treatment team members and what they are responsible for, including physicians, therapists, dietitians, parents and the child with the eating disorder.
  • FBT Overview: a 1-page handout outlining what FBT is, the benefits of FBT and a brief description of each of the phases.
  • FBT Phase One, Two & Three: handouts diving deeper into the various phases of FBT, outlining the defining features of each and what parents should expect.
  • The Medical Complications of Eating Disorders: a 4-page handout that outlines the complications that parents need to be aware of with eating disorders and the typical timeline for the medical complications to resolve. This is necessary in phase one of FBT in order to help raise the parent’s concern and understanding of the complexity and severity of the eating disorder.
  • What Caregivers Need to Know: a 1-page handout covering crucial information on how eating disorders function, how to implement FBT in the home and what to expect with regard to their child’s emotions.
  • Meal Support Strategies: a 2-page handout describing how to manage meal planning and preparation and how parents can provide supported eating. Includes suggestions of how to respond to and coach the child through a meal, as well as co-regulation options for after a meal.
  • What Does Refeeding Look Like?: a 1-page handout that outlines the different steps to eating during recovery. This handout can help to communicate expectations to teens and their parents about what the nutrition priority is during different phases of recovery.
  • Treatment Goal Weights for Adolescents: a 4-page handout covering what a treatment goal weight is, how it is calculated and the prioritization of state, not weight. Incorporates a weight-inclusive approach and explains the limitations of BMI. Also educates parents on weight stigma, weight bias, fat-phobia, diet culture, healthism and Health at Every Size. Asks parents to engage in reflection with regard to their own internalized weight bias and provides suggestions to learn to accept their child’s weight and body.
  • References: 1-page of references used in the creation of the above handouts.
