“I can’t get him to try new foods”

“He won’t eat any vegetables”

“She’s so picky, she won’t eat what I give her”

Do any of those phrases sound familiar in working with pediatric clients and their parents?  All too often, the barrier to including healthful foods and expanding variety in the diet is resistance to trying new foods.  As I have found in my practice, parents are often unsure of how to offer/introduce new and unfamiliar foods to their children.  The strategy is often to make the child try a food, eat a certain number of bites or pressure them to try in one form or another.

This handout provides a layout for the optimal setting and framework to encourage kids to experience foods they have not yet learned to like.  Parents will gain valuable tips including:

  • neutral attitude when a child isn’t yet ready to try the food
  • talk/language to use surrounding the new food
  • pairing unfamiliar with familiar
  • repeated exposure
  • and more!
