Spanish- Simple pictorial handout for renal diet education with the ten most common high phosphorus foods and some simple lower phosphorus substitutes.  I use this for a first time education on phosphorus to pull on some of the biggest trigger foods.

Providing education on Phosphorous can be tricky and also may leave the dialysis patient feeling discouraged about all of the foods that they cannot have. It is important to inform dialysis patients that while phosphorous is in most all foods, some need to be more limited, while others can be enjoyed more often. This pictorial handout is great to provide simple, yet effective, education on which top ten foods to be aware of high phosphorous levels–while also showing several great ideas that can be used in their place!

The BIG 10 include:

  • processed lunch meats
  • organ meats
  • nuts
  • chocolate
  • ice cream
  • cheese
  • cola
  • bran
  • milk/ yogurt
  • beans

Food items that you will find listed that the patient can enjoy more freely include:

  • lemon-lime sodas
  • sorbet
  • cream cheese
  • corn/ rice cereals
  • and more!

Don’t let your patients be fooled by hidden phosphorous additives and high phosphorous food products–provide them this renal-friendly educational handout to help equip them with the tools to be successful in lowering their daily phosphorous intakes!
