Removing extra fluid is an essential function of Hemodialysis. This Bulletin Board is intended to help patients understand the process by reviewing:

  • What is a Target Weight and how is it determined
  • Health risks of retaining extra fluid
  • How to manage and avoid cramping
  • How fluid removal is calculated

Sometimes patients can be resistant to fluid removal due to preconceived notions or difficult past treatments. The goal of this education is show the thinking behind clinical decisions around a patients’ target weight and fluid goals.  

By including a some details of how patients can help themselves, they may feel more in control with their HD treatments and become more comfortable communicating with staff members.
