This one page handout is designed to help parents provide a framework for nourishing family meals in the home.  The structure and timing of meals can often be a barrier to implementing healthful changes in the diet and helping kids learn to like new foods.  This handout explains suggested roles for parents/caregivers and children at times of feeding based on Ellyn Satter’s Division of Responsibility in feeding (source is fully cited on the handout).  Tips include parents providing the what, when and where of meals and snacks and kids deciding if and how much at those feedings.  Mealtime quick-tips for language surrounding foods, variety and balance, and using non-food rewards are also highlighted. I hope this handout is as useful for you as it has been for me in helping families improve meal structure, leading to incorporating nourishing foods into those routines. Getting the “how” right helps the “what” and “how much” to naturally fall into place.
