Beverages may be one of the most challenging items to educate dialysis patients on in regards specifically to phosphorous. This colorful, pictorial handout, focuses on drinks to limit– in addition to others than can be enjoyed more freely while on dialysis. This handout is perfect for any patient who may have low literacy levels, as each beverage is represented by photo, and also highlights popular brands that dialysis patients may think are appropriate- but are not encouraged- to drink while following a renal diet. Included on this handout you’ll find:

Great low-phosphorous choices:

  • Water
  • Crystal Lite Lemonade
  • Gingerale
  • Root Beer
  • + more!

Beverages to limit with high phosphorous:

  • Fanta Orange
  • Sunny Delight
  • Kool Aid
  • Country Time Lemonade
  • Crystal Lite Pink Lemonade

Special notes include reminding dialysis patients to be nutrition label detectives looking for P-H-O-S on the nutrient label, in addition to educating patients that phosphorous additives are not brand specific– in that different flavors of the same brand may greatly vary in phosphorous additive amounts!

  • Nice visual for my patients!

Saved me a lot of time, thanks! My busy days don’t allow me to make nice handouts like these. The only suggestion I have: I can’t tell what the beverage is in the top left corner. Is it coffee?

  • Great visual tool for avoiding phosphorus

I love using this tool to help my patients avoid phosphorus. It works well for those who have poor eye sight as well as those who need lower literacy tools. It also makes more of an impression because people can more easily remember pictures of the better options to choose. I also love that it focuses on limiting phosphorus additives
