Dialysis patients are educated, most often, from the very first day of Dialysis (and sometimes even before starting Dialysis!) to monitor dietary intakes, and more specifically told to reduce intake of potassium, sodium, and phosphorous. While potassium and sodium are readily available on most all nutrient labels, phosphorous is not as straight forward to find, and therefore, often becomes difficult for patients to monitor.

Patients see statements on dialysis handouts such as “Beware of Hidden Phosphorous!” or “Phosphorous is in everything–don’t let it sneak up on you!” These headlines can be intimidating and may leave the Dialysis patient questioning, well–what can I eat? And where can I find how much phosphorous is in what I am eating or drinking?

Enter: the “Inspect for P-H-O-S” handout! This colorful and easy to understand, phosphorous- based, handout is perfect for any and all dialysis patients! Not only will you find pictorial representation of foods with low phosphate additives vs foods with high phosphate additives, but this handout also includes an example of a products nutrition label identifying what exactly a phosphate additive looks like on the ingredient list, highlighting why to look for P-H-O-S.

This handout is the perfect addition to any number of other educational materials, giving your dialysis patient a tangible resource on where to find phosphate additives on a label, noting that phosphate additives are more readily absorbed in the body, and also by giving visual representation of common food products in comparison to one another (example: Hormel Natural Choice meats without phosphate additives vs Oscar Meyer Carving Board products having increased phosphate additives.)

This is one handout you’ll want to keep handy for Dialysis patients questioning how to navigate that pesky phosphorous!
