This new handout embraces the new KDOQI guidelines, and provides a fresh approach for you to discuss protein with your patients.  While animal proteins may work really well for some of your patients, there are others who are vegetarian or where high intake of animal protein may be unappealing, contributing to constipation, inflammation, or higher phosphorus and potassium intakes.  Without the focus on HBV proteins, you can tailor your protein recommendations to better meet your patient’s overall needs.

This handout helps patients see how they can easily include a variety of plant proteins to foods they already enjoy.  There are also additional sections that highlight for the patient and dietitian where more specific dietitian guidance might be needed- like choosing a variety of foods to ensure adequate intake, adding healthy fats for satiety at meals etc.  This makes it easy for you to discuss these potential issues with your patient to ensure they have a well rounded diet.

We have also added plant protein supplement suggestions so that your patients who need a little protein boost have clear options.

There are many options for plant-focused recipes, but to give your patients a jump start, we have also included a few tasty recipes for quick access.
