page images of potassium 101 educational handout

Increasing evidence indicates that high potassium levels in kidney disease may not always be related to dietary intake.  Although this can be a factor for some patients, it is important to help patients understand all potential causes to choose the best intervention.

This 2 page handout provides:

  • A brief list of causes of high potassium (diet and non-diet related)
  • Why high potassium is a concern
  • What the patient can do about it
  • Ideas to resolve constipation, increase fiber intake (including appropriate portion sizes of higher potassium, high fiber foods) and healthy fats (which can also help resolve constipation without adding potassium)

This list is appropriate for patients on dialysis as well as patients with stage 3-5 CKD
