Part of my Gut Health Guide series, this 2-page handout provides dietary and lifestyle guidance for managing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including:

  • Importance of ruling out other gastrointestinal disorders before designing nutritional treatment for IBS.
  • First-line dietary guidelines for IBS, including limiting gut irritants, such as coffee, alcohol, spicy foods and others.
  • Lifestyle recommendations to address/reduce/prevent symptoms, such as stress management and exercise.
  • Recommended (and evidence-based) supplements to help alleviate IBS symptoms.
  • Very basic introduction to the Low FODMAP Diet (note: this handout is not intended to provide actual guidance for this diet. Please see the other handouts in my Gut Health Guide series).

Page 2 of the document provides additional guidance, including the importance of evidence-based treatment recommendations and links key resources (websites, recipes, online courses, etc.).

The handout can be used for clinical nutrition support and/or adult nutrition education, as well as education for RDs who may not yet be familiar with the complexities of IBS.
