No one wants to get the flu, but sometimes despite our best efforts, we get it anyway. This handout reviews the typical recommendations (getting the flu shot, washing hands etc) but also includes other recommendations to improve immunity such as: getting enough sleep, eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as promising research that has found taking probiotics a few weeks prior to getting the flu shot improves immunity more than the flu shot alone. The brands of probiotics listed in the handout are ones that contain the same species used in the studies referenced (although not always the same strain as that was not always specified).
This handout is designed to be used in a conventional setting where the flu shot is provided or recommended, with the intention of helping people understand that diet and lifestyle also play a role in having healthy immunity.
This handout can be used in a wellness setting to educate staff or employees or in private practice, however it was originally used as part of an action plan to help improve albumin levels in those on dialysis.
