Fluid restrictions for dialysis patients often seem unrealistic.  How many times do you find yourself giving the same fluid education to the same patients?  These handouts provide fresh, realistic recommendations to help patients make changes.  This tool kit also provides an easy way for you to track your patient’s average fluid gains between treatments.  The focus isn’t just on fluid, but also includes tips to decrease sodium intake.

This package of tools contains:

  • 4 patient handouts- focusing on limiting sodium to have more manageable IDWG over the weekend, ideas for limiting fluids when it’s hot, and kidney-friendly summer drinks without potassium and phosphorus additives, recipes and tips; and NEW handout on addressing thrust, dry mouth, and ways to be more aware of fluid intake
  • A pie chart of sources of sodium in the diet (Very illuminating for patients who think they follow a low sodium diet because they don’t add salt to their food but still eat processed foods)  This is great to laminate and use as a visual tool
  • An excel spreadsheet set up to help you track average monthly IDWG and provide your patients with a specific goal of maximum fluid gain between each treatment.  If you aren’t familiar with how to use excel, there are instructions!  Just click on the tab at the bottom of the worksheet labeled “instructions” and it will walk you through how to utilize the worksheet.
