Gelline’s Beginner Mindset, Outpatient Niche and Smart Selling Leads to Success in Under Six Months; Here’s How to Replicate Her Achievement

Welcome to the WellResourced success story series! Today we’re spotlighting Gelline Galgana, “The Outpatient Dietitian,” who has carved a niche for herself and her business in bariatrics nutrition. Her WellResourced store is comprised mostly of resources and handouts for bariatric patient support, plus a few with a focus on weight management and diabetes care.

Gelline’s bariatric materials are designed with outpatient dietitians and community educators in mind, as Gelline knows first-hand the need that she experienced for clear, concise and effective resources for her own patients.

“The bariatric area is a very unique specialty,” Gelline shares. “There aren't many dietitians who see bariatric patients even though there is so much need. It is an area that continues to expand, and many bariatric patients need direction and support in order to be successful in improving their health.”

Get to Know Gelline: New Bariatric Dietitian

I am actually a new dietitian! I started working in bariatrics right after I finished my dietetic internship in 2020. I then passed the RDN exam in 2021.

Congratulations, Gelline! Tell us about your path to choosing dietetics.

“I became a dietitian following my father’s heart attack – this happened when I was in high school. My dad recovered, thankfully, and I realized that my family’s nutritional health was in poor condition and needed changing.

I was born on the small island of Palawan, Philippines, with a food culture full of foods that are high in refined carbohydrates, sodium and fat. This combination was the formula that led to my father’s heart attack. I felt responsible as the cook of the family, and I started researching and substituting healthier alternatives to our daily food choices.

I then learned that the college I planned to attend had a dietetic program – and that’s how it began.”

Since becoming a dietitian, Gelline has honed her niche in bariatrics. She explains,

“Bariatrics is an area that is always expanding, and many patients need direction and support to be successful. Interestingly enough, when I started working as a bariatric dietitian, I struggled to find bariatric educational resources.

Gelline’s observation has led to her success on WellResourced. Read on!

Gelline’s Content on WellResourced.com

WellResourced.com provides resources for dietitians – by dietitians. When Gelline was looking online in various places for bariatric resources for her outpatient clients, she found a few – but:

“The few that I found were wordy and ineffective. Think about it – if you just had bariatric surgery, a very major and invasive surgery, are you interested in sitting down to read a manual that provides the do’s and don’ts?”

Not likely.

“To meet the need for to-the-point materials, I created ones that are filled with pictures, and are incredibly easy to follow and understand. These patients need immediate, critical nutrition education. My materials can also be used for a low-literacy population. And, I provide Spanish versions for most of my products as well.”

Her customers agree.

Historically, Bariatric RD’s have distributed lists of recommended protein supplements filled with facts and composition information, which patients rarely read. This handout shows accurate, colored pictures of the products and a picture is worth 1000 words! The author has divided the information into Non-vegan and Vegan options and the information is double sided: English and Spanish. Protein and fluid are the main talking points for bariatric nutrition education. This handout is something you will use every day, well worth purchasing.

Better Bariatric Nutrition Resources

Gelline’s content supports bariatric dietitians and bariatric educators, and include the likes of Diet Progression After Bariatric Surgery and Bariatric Supplements: The Complete Guide

Her well-planned content sells well on WellResourced.com. In just a few short months as a vendor, Gelline’s 30-plus products have resulted in nearly 400 sales! This has amounted to nearly $1,000 in profit for Gelline – in under six months!

In addition to popular products noted above, Gelline created resources to guide bariatric support groups. Group work is core in her outpatient role, and her patients learn much from one another in this environment. Her bestsellers are group support presentations:

Support Group Presentation - Personal Goals ($5)

Support Group Presentation - Healthy Holidays ($5)

“Honestly, I created most of the products I have in my store because I personally need those specific handouts to educate my patients – whether in one-on-one consults or in group support sessions. If I cannot find a handout that I want to use, then I create one. In this way, I am also testing out my products before putting them out on the market.”

And you can do the same!

Selling SmartGelline’s Approach

Offering a freebie to WellResourced shoppers is a smart way of boosting your sales, and Gelline has found this to be absolutely true.

Her customizable Free Bariatric Nutrition Assessment Form helps RDNs support bariatric patients prior to the very first session for overall success.

“And it generates traffic to my other bariatric standalone products and bundles within my store,” she says.

As a new dietitian, Gelline’s success on WellResourced can be yours, too.

“I notice that many RDNs are creating digital downloads, not just due to the pandemic but also to reach more of our client population. The digital world can be intimidating for those who are not tech-savvy. But don't lose hope, there is always help! Always be open to learning new skills and take things one step at a time!”

Wise words, Gelline! Tell us more about taking the leap.

“I started my store when I was not even sure what to make for my products. I made a few handouts and then I slowly added products every week. My first month as an WellResourced vendor, I earned around $100.

But just three months later, I was surprised to earn nearly $400 in one month! The uptick in sales resulted from created bundled products at a higher price point, plus the freebie assessment form that generated interest in my store.”

We admire your beginner’s mindset and growth, Gelline! Do you have any final advice to someone who has yet to set up a WellResourced store?

“Yes! Here is my suggested list of must-dos:

      • Create your handouts while you’re setting up your store
      • Keep adding products! Offer both individual products and bundles
      • Keep things simple, add pictures and less words
      • Create a social media platform to update your regular customers
      • Offer customizable and unbranded products

“Lastly, just go for it. Make your content work for you. I’m so glad that I didn’t wait – and my sales are proof that filling a need in the market will result in money for you and your business.”

We hope Gelline’s story has inspired you. Take the next step – become an WellResourced.com vendor today
